Prepare desired foods, let the food settle. We have tried this with sucrose/yeast food, cornmeal/molasses food, and with 20% sucrose,1% agar. The results appear equivalent across media types.
Mash the food with a coffee grinder then weigh 1g into tubes, centrifuge tubes so food settles at the bottom. Store tubes with food at 4ºC until used.
Prepare 20E concentrations diluted in ethanol, stored in -20ºC.
Before adding larvae onto the food, add desired amount of 20E for 1g of food on top of it and mix. Centrifuge once again to ensure food stays at the bottom and even.
