Data analysis protocol for “Meta-Research: A comprehensive review of randomized clinical trials in three medical journals reveals 396 medical reversals”
Using Microsoft Excel and R (package tidyverse), summary statistics were calculated for reversal articles as frequencies and percentages for the following:
- Overall and for each journal
- by economic status (as defined by the World Bank, and stratified by high-income vs low- and middle-income)
- by intervention type (medication, procedure, vitamins/supplements/food, device, system intervention, optimization of a procedure, behavioral therapy, screening test, treatment algorithm, diagnostic instrument, radiation, and over-the-counter medication)
- by medical discipline (cardiovascular disease, public heal/preventive medicine, critical care medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, neurology/neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedic, pulmonary disease, pediatrics, gastroenterology/hepatology, endocrinology, diabetes, metabolism, psychiatry, nephrology, infectious disease, surgery, urology, allergy/immunology, anesthesiology, rheumatology, ophthalmology)
- funding category (industry sources, non-industry sources, a combination of industry and non-industry, a combination of non-industry plus insurance or development bank, and funding sources not available)
