Dear El,

Thank you for your question!

The Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale–Short Form (IUS-12; Carleton, Norton, & Asmundson, 2007) measures reactions to uncertainty, ambiguous situations, and the unknown future.

Each item is scored on a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (not at all characteristic of me) to 5 (entirely characteristic of me).

The total score evaluates general IU and is calculated as the sum of all items, thus ranging between 12 and 60. Higher scores represent holding more negative beliefs about uncertainty and its implications.

Note that the IUS-12 can be also divided into two factors: prospective anxiety (e.g., “Unforeseen events upset me greatly”) and inhibitory anxiety (e.g., “Uncertainty keeps me from living a full life”).

Good luck with your study!

Best,

Einav
