Why add 2% FBS to the PBS while isolating PBMC?

protocol Protocol: PBMC isolation and dead cell removal

I just want to know the function of the 2%FBS we add to the PBS used in mixing the whole blood during PBMC isolation processes.

Thanks.

I think the function of FBS is to let the DMSO diffuse out of the cells during the thawing procedure. Also, it's good to add the solution (PBS and FBS) slowly and dropwise to the cell suspension. The slow diffusion is essential for cell survival. It's similar that when we use complete medium(FBS added) to thaw the cells.
