How to avoid band smear in western blot?

It seems that there is no problem with the apparatus, the gel or the transfer process, as the bands in the second and third lanes seem good. So the problem may be caused by your sample in the first lane, you may have loaded too much protein, or it has been degraded. You can try less protein loading, and avoid repeated freezing-and-thawing of the sample.
