What is the reason that lead to the improvement of electrophoresis for low molecular weight proteins?

This work demonstrated excellent electrophoresis separation of low molecular weight protein between 0.6 kDa and 3.5 kDa. From the recipes, it seems urea was added to the separation gel. Is that the factor that contributes to the good separation of small proteins?
