In the avatar condition (Figure 8), participants viewed an animation showing germs disappearing from a pair of illustrated hands layered on top of the user’s reflection. These are referred to as avatar hands, as they are meant to represent the user’s hands. The perspective displayed was that which is seen if the individual were to hold up their hands and look at them.
