The BDI is a self-report tool to assess the severity of depression (41, 42). Each item has a 4-point rating from 0 (no symptom) to 3 (severe symptom). The BDI score is obtained by summing the scores of all the items. The BDI has an internal consistency reliability coefficient ranging from 0.76 to 0.92 (42). The BDI-Malay is a self-report tool to assess the severity of depression (43). The Malay version of this tool has internal consistency values ranging from 0.71 to 0.91 (43).
