The 5xFAD mice are APP/PS1 double transgenic mice that co-express five FAD mutations and were purchased from the Jackson Laboratory (Bar Harbor, ME, USA). These mice are hemizygous for the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and presenilin 1 (PSEN1) transgenes on a congenic C57BL/6 background and display elevated levels of cerebral Aβ and accelerated Aβ plaque development in the brain, representing some of the pathological features of AD [36].
