The ARI case definition was based on the WHO definition for community-based RSV surveillance (23) and included the following criteria:

Acute – defined as a sudden onset of symptoms;

Respiratory infection – defined as having at least one of the following: shortness of breath, cough, sore throat, coryza;

Clinician's judgement that the illness is due to an infection.

Note: Point (3) was added to the definition by the RSV ComNet research team.
