To measure pyoverdine production, strains were grown in synthetic cystic fibrosis media29 for 24 h in 50 ml flasks and the absorbance of culture supernatants was measured at 405 nm according to a previously published protocol73. All measurements were normalized to culture density as determined by the absorbance of the bacterial culture at 600 nm.
