Hormones of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis were analysed in serum from blood samples drawn between 8.00 and 12.00 a.m., including LH, FSH, testosterone and inhibin B. Serum LH and FSH levels were determined using highly specific time-resolved fluoro-immunoassays (Autodelfia, Freiburg, Germany). Serum testosterone was measured by fluorescence photometry (Architect ABBOTT GmbH, Wiesbaden, Germany) and inhibin B by a solid phase sandwich assay (Beckman-Coulter, Krefeld, Germany).
