Medium was prepared according to Stams et al. (1993) and modified as follows: 408 mg/L KH2PO4, 534 mg/L Na2HPO4⋅2H2O, 300 mg/L NH4Cl, 300 mg/L NaCl, 100 mg/L MgCl2⋅6H2O, 110 mg/L CaCl2⋅2H2O; 1 mL trace metal and 1 mL vitamin stock solution (Stams et al., 1993). 1 L medium (except for CaCl2⋅2H2O and vitamins) was prepared and brought to boiling in order to remove O2, cooled down to room temperature under an oxygen-free N2 flow, then CaCl2⋅2H2O and the vitamins were added as well as Na2S (0.24 g/L) as reducing agent.
