Osteocytes were isolated from long bones of 8–16-wk-old wild-type C57BL/6, Q(S), Rag1, or Pdgfrα-nGFP mice. Cells were FACS sorted for SCA1−/CD31−/PDGFRA−/CD51+ and cultured in DMEM + P/S/G + 100 μg/mL of ascorbate + 10% FCS (see SI Appendix).
