Mice were anaesthetized with isoflurane and received intravenously 150 µL of a fluorescent imaging probe MMP-sense 680 (NEV 10126, PerkinElmer) 24 h before sacrifice. This agent is optically silent in its un-activated state and becomes highly fluorescent following activation by MMPs including MMP-2, −3, −9, and −13. Images of ischemic hearts were acquired using a fluorescence molecular imaging system (FMT 2500TM, VisEn Medical)41.
