SDH staining was performed on 3-week-old mice. For SDH staining, freshly cut 7-μm-thick cryosections were used. Sections were incubated in SDH incubating solution (one tablet of nitrobluetetrazolium dissolved in 0.1 M sodium succinate–0.1 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.4, all from Sigma-Aldrich) for 1 h at 37 °C, rinsed in distilled water, rapidly passed in 30%, 60%, 30% acetone (VWR), and rinsed again in distilled water. Sections were then rapidly dehydrated in graded EtOH solutions, cleared in xylene, and mounted with Eukitt mounting medium.
