The data from the checkerboard assay were used for ΣFIC values calculation, and results were analyzed according to the guidelines published by Odds [38]. Fractional inhibitory concentration index (ΣFIC) was calculated for each combination as follows (Equation (1)):

The interaction of two antimicrobial agents was considered synergistic if the ΣFIC was ≤ 0.5, indifferent when the ΣFIC index value was in the range from 0.5 to 4.0, and antagonistic if the ΣFIC was ≥ 4.0.
