We collected water for active eDNA filtration to compare to our passive method. Nine 1 L surface water samples were collected in sterile 1 L containers at both sites and filtered over nine non-charged cellulose membranes (47 mm diameter, 0.45 µm pore size) using a peristaltic Sentino® Microbiology Pump in a laboratory setting aboard the vessel. At Ashmore reef, we actively filtered triplicate 1 L water samples at 8:00, 12:00 and 16:00 on the final day of the experiment (20 June 2019). At Daw Island, we actively filtered 1 L samples at 08:00, 12:00 and 16:00 each day for all 3 days of the experiment (30 January–1 February 2019).
