BAL was collected from patients with pulmonary fibrosis undergoing routine bronchoscopy for a noninfective indication. The bronchoscope was navigated to the right middle lobe and wedged, a BAL was undertaken with 40 ml of instillations of 0.9% NaCl. Retrieved BALF was filtered through a 40-μm cell strainer and centrifuged at 1200 rpm for 10 min at 4°C. The cell pellet was resuspended and used in coculture experiments.
