To measure CORT levels in experiment 1, animals were sacrificed by decapitation and trunk blood was collected in a cup containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic (9 g/100 ml) acid (EDTA; Hagewoud, Whitcomb, et al., 2010; van der Borght et al., 2006). Subsequently, the samples were centrifuged at 2,600 g at 4°C and the supernatant was collected in polycarbonate cups. Plasma CORT levels were measured by a double antibody radioimmunoassay method for rodents, using an immuChem™ kit (MP Biomedicals LLC). CORT levels of samples were measured in duplicate.
