All animal studies were approved by the Institutional Care and Use of Committee of UNC-CH. Anesthetized C57BL/6J mice (Jackson Laboratories, Bar Harbor, ME) were inoculated with 2 × 104 CFU intranasally as described previously (36). Mice were sacrificed at 24 h and 72 h postinoculation; lungs and spleens removed for determination of bacterial enumeration. The data are presented as CFU/gram tissue.
