The numbers of colonies (CFU) were counted by the scientific image analysis software IMAGE J 1.52a (NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA). For each Petri dish, the 2-mm edge was removed to avoid light interruption. For average colony size analysis, particles with sizes from 5 to 500 pixel2 were considered to obtain an average colony size (pixel2) of each dish, with SD. The true colony size was calculated by converting the pixel2 into the actual size with a ratio of pixel-to-mm, obtained from the ‘scale’ function.
