Evaluation of Mitochondrial Morphology Using Transmission Electron Microscopy

Mitochondrial structure was assessed by transmission electron microscopy examination of at least 100 mitochondria per sample at a magnification of 8000 as previously reported with some minor modifications.²⁴ Mitochondrial size and number of mitochondria per PTEC were measured, and mitochondrial density was calculated as the number of mitochondria per square micrometer PTEC area. For aspect ratio measurements, the ratio between the major and minor axes of the ellipse equivalent to each mitochondrion was determined.
