To quantify intracellular iron after SPION labeling, the cells (1 × 106) were lysed in 0.4% sodium hydroxide and then a 36% hydrochloric acid aqueous solution. The intracellular iron content was measured with an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AFS-820, Beijing, China) and expressed as pg of iron per cell.
