For the evaluation of the severity of coronary artery stenosis, we used the Gensini scoring system as described25. The Gensini score was calculated based on the coronary angiography findings obtained within 1 month before the patient’s cardiac surgery. This score is the sum of all coronary artery segment scores where each segment score equals a predetermined segment weighting factor multiplied by the severity score. Specifically, percentage luminar diameter reductions of 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%, 99%, and complete occlusion were given the severity scores of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32, respectively. A high Gensini score indicates severe coronary artery stenosis.
