Adult B6.Cg-Tg(SOD1-G93A)1Gur/J mice expressing high copy number of mutant human SOD1 with a Gly93Ala substitution (SOD1-G93A) were originally obtained from Jackson Laboratories (Bar Harbor, ME, USA) and bred in indoor animal facility.

All animal procedures have been performed according to the European Guidelines for the use of animals in research (86/609/CEE) and the requirements of Italian laws (D.L. 116/92). Ethical procedures have been approved by the Animal Welfare Office, Department of Public Health and Veterinary, Nutrition and Food Safety, General Management of Animal Care and Veterinary Drugs of the Italian Ministry of Health. All efforts were made to minimize animal suffering and to limit the number of animals necessary to produce reliable results. Transgenic progeny was genotyped analyzing tissue extracts from tail tips as described in Apolloni et al.31
