The estimated sample size was calculated by using the sample size formula for cross-sectional studies: N = Z2p (1 − p)/d2, where N is the estimated minimum sample size, Z is the confidence level of 95% (the standard value is 1.96), P is the expected proportion of women with knowledge of MTCT routes for HIV in the population = 50% (based on previous studies in the area, [15, 25], and d is the precision at 95%CI = 0.05.

With an adjustment of 20% for nonresponse, a minimum sample size of 460 women with children below 5 years was required for the study.
