It is clear from the model that the pulse durations are equal to the onset-to-onset intervals, also called valley-to-valley intervals in synthetic PPG signals. The difference between valley-to-valley intervals is represented by the angular velocity ω. The dynamic model can repeat the morphology to generate the required signal length. By providing a series of valley-to-valley intervals, the model can synthesize a continuous PPG.

The pulse durations in the synthetic PPG are generated using the normal distribution random function with mean and standard deviation. The mean value and the standard deviation are calculated according to the mean heart rate and the standard deviation of beat-to-beat intervals provided by the user. Variability of parameters on a beat-to-beat basis was not considered in this study.
