Apoptosis in tumor tissue was determined with a standard in situ TUNEL method following the manufacturer’s directions (Promega, Madison, WI, USA). Images of the sections were taken by a fluorescence microscope (Olympus, Tokyo, Japan) and images were analyzed by a person who was blinded to the animal group information. Apoptotic cells were counted as the number of TUNEL positive cells per mm2 of each examined section.
