The WAS procedure was carried out in a brightly lit room (230–250 lux). Mice were placed on a small platform (6 × 3 × 6 cm, length × width × height) in the centre of a water-filled box (61 × 40 × 22 cm, length × width × height), the level of the water (25 °C) in the box being 0.5 to 1 cm below the platform as previously described9,11,13. Following exposure to WAS for 30 min, the animals were returned to their home cage. Ninety minutes post-WAS the animals were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (150 mg/kg injected intraperitoneally).
