MPTP opening was monitored by coloading cells with calcein/AM and CoCl2. Detailed instructions can be found in the MPTP assay kit (Genmed Scientific, Inc., Shanghai, P. R. China). Calcein fluorescence intensity was measured using a monochromator microplate reader with an excitation of 488 nm and emission of 505 nm (Safire II, Tecan, Switzerland).
