Plasma insulin concentrations were determined using an insulin RIA kit (Poor Albert Biotechnology Technology Coporation, Beijing China). The HOMA-IR (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance) index reflects the degree of insulin resistance and was calculated as fasting serum glucose times fasting serum insulin over a factor of 22.5 [42].
