Functional outcome at 24 months was quantified using the modified Rankin scale (mRS) using multiple ascertainment methods to maximize follow‐up; these included postal questionnaires sent to patients and their general practitioners, and death notifications from NHS Digital (previously the Health and Social Care Information Centre).20 The mRS was dichotomized, with a score of ≤2 indicating independence.30
