At 8–10 weeks of age, male C57BL/6 J mice (Jackson Laboratory, Stock Number: 000664) received an i.p. injection of kainic acid (30 mg/kg body weight) or an equal volume of 0.9% saline as described99. Mice were returned to their cages and monitored for behavioral seizures every 10 minutes for 2 hours following injection. Behavioral seizures were scored according to a modified Racine scale as described previously100,101. At 24 hours post injection, mice were euthanized by CO2 inhalation and brains stored at −80 °C until use.
