LDH toxicity assays were performed by measuring the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) to the culture medium using the CytoTox96® Non-Radioactive Cytotoxicity Assay kit (Promega, Madison, USA) following the manufacturer’s instructions as previously described [25]. LDH release was defined by the ratio LDH released/total LDH present in the cells, with the total LDH being 100%. All the samples were run in quadruplicate.
