Rat hearts were divided into atria and ventricles, and isolated left atria (LA) were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde for 24 hours, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned transversely at 5 μm. Masson trichrome staining was used to evaluate interstitial fibrosis. Images were visualized by light microscopy (ECLIPSE 80i; Nikon, Japan). The LA fibrotic area was analyzed at ×400 magnification as the percentage of area of positive fibrotic staining divided by total myocardial tissue areas by using image analysis system software (Image‐Pro Plus version 6.0).
