Primary rat mixed glial cell cultures were generated from P1‐2 day old wild‐type Sprague–Dawley rat pups. Briefly, pups were decapitated, and their cerebral cortices were isolated, minced, separated into a single cell suspension, and plated in T75 flasks. Mixed glial cultures were grown in Dulbecco's Modified Enriched Media (DMEM, ThermoFisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, Cat. No. 11995–065) that contained high glucose, L‐glutamine, phenol red, and sodium pyruvate with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS, ThermoFisher Scientific, Cat. No. 16000–044) for 3 weeks at 37°C and 10% CO2.
