Serum concentration of FITC–dextran (FD4, Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA) was used a measure of intestinal permeability as previously described51. Briefly, FITC–dextran was dissolved in PBS at a concentration of 100 mg/ml and was administered through oral gavage of 44 mg/100 g body weight. After 4 h, serum was collected by cardiac puncture. Fluorescence intensity of diluted sera was measured on a TriStar2 S LB 942 Modular Monochromator Multimode Reader (Berthold Technologies, Bad Wildbad, Germany). Serum from mice not administered with FITC–dextran was used to determine the background.
