Cells were harvested during exponential growth phase by gentle vacuum filtration (800 mbar suction pressure) onto polycarbonate filters (Isopore TSTP membranes, 3.0 μm pore size, Millipore, Billerica, Massachusetts). For the analyses of pigments, lipids and all other metabolites, culture volumes drawn onto the filters were 300, 300, and 2000 mL, respectively. Filters were snap-frozen in liquid N2 and stored at -80°C. Samples were then freeze-dried before analyses to rule out degradation during transport.
