Cardiac fibrosis was assessed using Masson Trichrome staining as previously described by us (Chu et al. 2011). 4‐μm thick sections of cardiac tissue were sectioned and for each section and measurement of fibrosis, 10 fields were chosen at random and imaged under light microscopy using the Olympus BH2 microscope at ×40 magnification. Fibrosis was then quantified using ImagePro Plus software (Adept Electronic Solutions Pty Ltd, Moorabin, Australia).
