Confluent cultures were detached from the surface using trypsin (Tryp LE Express) and plated at 2 × 104 cells/well in either Petri dishes (Mat-Tek 35 mm, with 14 mm glass microwell) for imaging or 96-well plates for other tests. All cell culture media and additives were purchased from Invitrogen, Life Technologies.

MCF7, MDA-MB-231, and HeLa cells were incubated for 2 h with QD-1 (200 μg/mL) and 1 (10 μg/mL), followed by extensive PBS washes, and imaged immediately thereafter in the imaging buffer.
