The ABTS cation decolorization assay (20) was performed with modifications to compare the antioxidant activity of MGME to that of catechin. The ABTS radical cation (ABTS•+) was produced by reacting a 7 mM ABTS solution with 2.4 mM potassium peroxodisulfate at room temperature in the dark for 12 hr, after which it was diluted with ethanol to an absorbance of 0.7 ± 0.02 at 734 nm. The samples were diluted to concentrations of 31.25~1,000 μg/mL, and 3 replicates of each were deposited in the wells of a 96-well plate. An equal volume of ABTS•+ solution was added, and the reaction proceeded for 7 min in the dark at 25°C before measuring the absorbance at 734 nm, which was used to calculate.
