To induce a pure brain inflammation, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, MO, USA, 0111: B4) was diluted with sterile PBS and administered at a dose of 500 μg/kg (IP). This dose of LPS is sufficient to cause brain inflammation without causing neuron death and has no effect on motor activity [4547]. The control group received the same volume of sterile saline. At 24 h after injection, the rats were sacrificed for later experiments. LPS-induced neuroinflammation models were successful, as shown by sharp increases in TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 mRNA levels detected by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR; data not shown).
