Coronal sections of the brain tissue (5 μm thick) were stained with cresyl violet as previously described.15 Normal neurons had large cell bodies and cytoplasmic volume, with one or two large, round nuclei. In contrast, damaged neuronal cells were identified as those with shrunken cell bodies, condensed nuclei, and dark cytoplasm containing many empty vesicles. Histological examination was performed by two observers who were blind to the group assignment.
