Chlorophyll content was measured as described (Arnon, 1949). The oxygen evolution rate of intact cells was measured with a Clark-type oxygen electrode (Hansatech Instruments Ltd.) and a LED lamp (CCS Inc., Kyoto, Japan). Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were performed with a Dual-PAM system (Heinz Walz GmbH). PSII quantum efficiency was measured as (Fm-Fo)/Fm, where Fm is the maximum PSII fluorescence obtained with a red saturating pulse (635 nm, 300 ms duration, 20,000 μmol photons m-2 s-1) and Fo is the minimum fluorescence obtained after 10 min of far red light (intensity setting 20) to ensure a state 1 transition.
