This was a prospective study, and in May 2010, a self-assessment ‘Basic Checklist’ (BCL) was distributed to 1611 elderly persons (aged ≥65 years) living in Iitate village. This baseline survey was conducted as a village government project to identify residents likely to require special care. There were 1277 respondents (79.3% response rate). In May 2013, a follow-up survey polled the 885 persons (69.3%) without a tendency to depression in the baseline study. The 438 respondents to this study became the subject of this study (figure 1).
