This study used the experimental model of MIA‐induced OA, as described previously (Guzman et al. 2003). Initially, the rats were anaesthetized with 100 mg/kg ketamine (Syntec, Cotia, SP, Brazil) and 15 mg/kg xylazine (Syntec). The knees were shaved and swabbed with H2O/EtOH solution. Then, OA was induced by injecting 1 mg of MIA (Sigma, São Paulo, SP, Brazil) dissolved in 50 μl of sterile saline into the intra‐articular space of the right knee (Clarke et al. 1997; Bar‐Yehuda et al. 2009). The left knee joint served as control and received the same volume of sterile saline.
