MRI was performed in vivo at 2 days post injury in anesthetized mice to determine the lesion volume using a horizontal 9.4 T Oxford NMR 400 magnet (Oxford instrument PLC, Abington, UK) as previously described.40 Multi-slice T2-weighted images were acquired: echo time/repetition time of 40 ms/3000 ms, matrix size 128 × 256, field of view 19.2 × 19.2 mm2, slice thickness 0.8 mm and number of slices 12. Images were then analyzed using Aedes software (Kuopio, Finland) under MatLab program (Math-works, Natick, USA).
