Three mice in each of the two experimental groups, osteophyte and cancellous bone, were killed at three and six weeks following transplantation, for histological analysis. The whole calvaria were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde, decalcified with 0.5 M ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and embedded in paraffin wax. Coronal sections (5 μm thick) were stained with Safranin O, fast green and Weigert’s iron haematoxylin, and examined by light microscopy. Concurrently, consecutive slices were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E).
