Cultures were centrifuged and resuspended as above, and then mixed with 800 μL of acetone at 50 °C to which 1 μg/mL Sudan I had been added as an internal standard. Tubes were agitated regularly for 10 min and then centrifuged at 17 900 rcf for 5 min. 450 μL of the extract was transferred to autosampler vials for HPLC analysis. Vials were stored at −80 °C until analysis for no more than 24 h.
